What is philosophical counselling?
Philosophical counselling is a transformative conversation. In the process, we examine your beliefs, values and assumptions and use ideas from the great thinkers in history to help solve your philosophical problems. It isn't therapy. We don't diagnose or treat mental health conditions. But we employ the perspectives of the wisest people in history to reach a higher perspective through dialogue and to get unstuck in our own lives.
"The unexamined life is not worth living"
— Socrates

About Mahon
I'm Mahon McCann, a philosophy PhD, lecturer and APPA-certified philosophical counsellor based in Dublin, Ireland. My PhD is in moral philosophy, particularly the issues of meaning and morality and maturity in the digital age. Through my podcasts and essays, I speak to thousands suffering through the meaning crisis and offer philosophical education and training to get back on track.
My approach to philosophical counselling draws on the Socratic and Platonic tradition, with many stoic techniques. I believe philosophy is not only theoretical but rather is a way of life that aims at personal transformation and living well. I myself struggled with many deep existential crises growing up and found answers to these deep questions in philosophy. In my practice, I help guide others in dialogue towards discovering their own answers and to building a durable philosophical map to get back on track to the life they ought to be living.

FAQ
Psychological therapy deals with psychological pathologies as defined in the DSM, while philosophical counselling is for those without psychological pathologies who have problems that are philosophical in nature. These problems can include questions of meaning, purpose and value, issues of personal and professional fulfilment, moral and ethical dilemmas, worldview issues or inconsistent belief systems, and general philosophical education and dialogue.
